Duckies have a new friend

This little kitten has made friends.

We couldn't find her this morning ... 

They were out foraging and it was time to go in I rounded them all up and not quite in a row the waddled back into the duck pen and as they did I counted cute little white heads 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, ... Wait who is missing? I counted them again and in doing so noticed it was Missy that was missing.  Her arthritis will make her slow and lazy sometimes so I circled back around the duck pen, but no Missy.  

I looked in all the known hiding places inside the pen and still didn't find her.  Now I was worried.  What happen where is she? I didn't hear any alarm quacking just normal morning quacking.  I search the woods behind the pen, the front yard, the garden, then the surrounding woods. No Missy to be found.  How can a big slow fussy duckie like Missy just disappear? I searched the inside the pen again.  Nope not under the duck house not even the forth time I checked, not in the duck house. 

Now I was in a fitful sad panic - where was she? 

I thought she must be gone - taken from me while I wasn't looking, by what I didn't know.  

Running late for my meeting I locked up the other duckies and left with my heart very very heavy.

I only told a couple of people, but one dear friend said she would pray for a miracle that Missy would come home safe and sound.

When I got home I immediately looked out the back and counted duckies through my window, - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, little girlies and Kouta, Beau, and Darrick - no Missy - then I went and changed clothes to go look for Missy again. 

I first went into the pen to give treats and guess who was there!??!?  YEP! Missy! 

Right there in plain sight!  I got so excited I freaked out a bit.  Missy stood there like, " yeah, I am here, duh, what is wrong with you?"

I am so so so happy to see this funny freckled face this evening!

So very very very happy!  I have no idea where she was hiding earlier. I am just so very thankful she is here and with us!! 

Timeout for Beau

Beau was being a bully so we gave him a little timeout.

GrMaDuck loved it but Beau wasn't too excited about it however neither was he too upset. 

Doesn't he have beautiful feet!

FYI: Our ducks are PETS, but we are sort of middle of the ground when it comes to protecting animals. Our love for our ducks as PETS, makes our heart more vulnerable to heartache when it comes to injury and death, than if they were livestock. We just want to add that we do have ducky friends who we admire and respect that are vegans who bestow on their feather loved ones equal rights (same as they give humans) and even greater accommodations and privileges because our feathered friends are in many ways a fragile species than humans.

Wintery Spring & creative temporary solutions

Snow and bitter cold in the early spring

The boys are being VERY aggressive with  the girls right now.  This really isn't their fault they are driven by their spring time hormones and instincts.

So to keep the peace we have separated the boys until the worst of the aggression passes.  Snow and bitter cold temps have complicated this however.  

When put up at night or after temps fall below 20* we separate them in the heated duck house with a pet gate.  We created a temporary solution for when they are outside in 22-40 degree temps and we expect precipitation.

A temp shelter for the boys.  With plans to build a more permanent one later.

I think we are all ready for warm temps to come and stay a while.

She keeps the duckies warm, and they return the favor.  A feather does a great job as a scarf pin.  

(This feather was  "shed" naturally and picked up while still clean.)

Winter

We are experiencing winter here.  The duckies are not big fans of days and days of temps that freeze their water. 

They will quack and complain to me like I should be able to make it better. LOL!

We do have heat lamps in their house and over their water buckets to help keep the water buckets from freezing over so quickly and to give them a "warm" (really less cold) place to retreat too.

At the start of winter they all would stay in the warm duck house most of the time on snowy or really cold days.  Now they don't this is mostly because the boy duckies have gone into "season", and our normally sweet boys are rough bossy hormonal boys.  So most of the time they will take turns rotating in and out of the house.  Here I caught them when they were all in the house together warming up. 

For the most part all our duckies. Are doing well.

Darrick our pet Cayuga drake seems to almost always be the first one in the clean pool almost like a cup bearer to King Kouta our very large Pekin drake who is #1 in pecking order, then most of the others follow.  Missy prefers to pool all to herself and will hang back and preen until most everyone else is finished.  We didn't quite capture it here but Darrick still loves to swim under water. It's so cute!!

flock bond continues to strengthen

This is just a super quick post to say all our duckies are doing well and that their bond into ONE little flock continues to strengthen.  The younger girls are getting more comfortable with the human flock members(s).

This is just two days worth.

No we are not going to incubate and hatch. We have our hands full right now with 10 pet duckies. We do however know a lot of people that enjoy eating them. We see these as nutritional gifts of love from our girlie duckies.

Thank you girls! We are so pleased that you are growing up to be such happy healthy girlies.

duck pool drains & LOTS of duckie pictures

The pool drains are working ... sort of ... They do drain, but being the size of a garden hose and full of dirt and other messy things they drain slowly. Which means a new morning and evening routine, but they are definitely helping reduce the amount of water and soggy mud around the pools and saving our backs.

We have for several years used a double layer of "kiddie" pools for our duckies.  Using two pools nested together helps prevent holes and cracks.  We replace the kiddie pools maybe once every year to two years.  We used "WaterWeld" a specialized epoxy putty to seal the drain holes inside and outside of the pools.  (In the picture above it is the white stuff around the joint).  This allows us to move the pools to dump out dirt etc with the drain hoses still attached and not have to worry about the integrity of a water tight seal around the joint.

and duckies splashing but this is far less water than before.

we have dividing fences with a internal gate for those times
when we need to separate such as when boy duckies
are being seasonally aggressive or if/when a certain
duckie needs R&R time due to injury illness
but is still well enough to be outside.

Due to all the rain and storms we have had this summer our sunken pool fills with dirt and mud much quicker than the above ground pool and it much harder to do the "deep" clean.  We may raise this pool at some later date.
