I ended up putting down at least four inches of 2" rock as the base in my duck pen and then covering it with 36" X 36" anti-fatigue mats from Lowe's. Fortunately, I found about sixteen on Craigslist that someone was selling out of their woodworking shop. Before using these mats in the pen, when it was merely the dirt substrate, my ducks suffered a ton of foot problems and had to be treated constantly. Since adding these mats over a year ago, they are doing great!
